The analysis in this report points to four promising areas for future VET funding reform.

This analysis highlights the intense pressure on young Australians. Young people facing long-term unemployment today are worse off than a decade ago, when far fewer of them – one in ten jobseekers – were unemployed for a year or more, compared with the nearly one in five now.

While this study analysed full qualifications only, future demand for VET may also be driven by the emerging need for the workforce of the future to reskill and upskill, by undertaking training based on skill sets or micro-credentials, rather than completing full qualifications.

This study will examine options for implementing several recommendations (related to the funding of VET courses and targeted funding programs) made by the Joyce Review. The Productivity Commission will draw on the Joyce Review more generally in this study, as well as evidence from other relevant reviews.

This report provides an analysis of data on training package skill sets uses data from the National Register of VET and the National Provider Collection – Total VET activity. The report identifies how much nationally recognised training package or training package skill set activity is occurring and where.
