This paper argues that a maritime realignment of Australia–Indonesia defence relations could shape the broader Indo-Pacific security architecture and provide an additional strategic hedge for both countries.

Indonesia is an overlooked contributor of global greenhouse gas emissions. Land use changes, peat fires and deforestation are the largest sources of greenhouse gases in the country. Over the next decade, however, its energy policies could see the main source of emissions shift to the energy sector.

The Sino-Indonesian relationship is complicated. While there is a mutual economic requirement to maintain bilateral relations, China’s geopolitical imperatives and Indonesia’s suspicions, coupled with its underlying ethnic tensions, combine to constrain it.

The United States and Indonesia share a healthy bilateral relationship. Given the current strains in the Asia-Pacific region and shared perceptions of a common aggressor, it is likely that the relationship will continue to strengthen.
