This inquiry was undertaken following the 2004 re-election of the Coalition government, and a stated commitment in its election policy to protect and support independent contractors. The committee was mindful of this background to ensure that views were sought and considered from state and territory governments, business groups, workers and their representatives, labour hire companies and other stakeholders.
