Description
Regulation is one of the main mechanisms that governments use in protecting the health and safety of the community. In the context of aged care, the ultimate aim of regulation is to protect aged care recipients from harm, support and promote positive health and wellbeing outcomes, and incentivise providers to deliver safe and high quality care for older Australians.
This paper is the third in a set of public consultation documents detailing the policy direction of a proposed new regulatory model for aged care. Recommendations include:
- The new aged care system needs to be more person-centered and focus on the needs and preferences of the individuals.
- There should be a stronger emphasis on prevention and early intervention to promote better health outcomes for older Australians.
- The regulatory system needs to be simplified and streamlined to reduce the burden on providers and improve the quality of care.
- The new system should include a stronger focus on workforce development and training to ensure that staff are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to provide high-quality care.
- There should be a greater emphasis on transparency and accountability, including more regular reporting and monitoring of provider performance.
- The new system should be designed to be flexible and adaptable to changing needs and circumstances.
- The proposed new model must be implemented in a way that does not disadvantage vulnerable groups or result in a reduction in the quality of care provided to older Australians.
