Referenda are an important part of Australia’s democratic constitutional landscape. Moreover, the iterative and consultative development of the conduct of Australian elections and referenda since Federation has served Australian democracy incredibly well. This submission supports the government inquiry into the Referendum (Machinery Provisions) Amendment Bill 2022 (‘the Referendum Bill’) by discussing the importance of referenda in Australian democracy and the proposed reforms within the Bill.
