National small business strategy
A joint initiative of the Australian, state and territory governments, this strategy provides a framework for more effective coordination and collaboration across jurisdictions to deliver better outcomes and greater support for small businesses.
Small businesses comprise around 97 per cent of all businesses in Australia. They contribute approximately $590 billion to the economy annually, almost one‑third of the country’s total GDP, and employ around 42% of the private sector workforce.
Three key focus areas are detailed in the strategy:
- easing the pressure on small businesses,
- supporting small businesses to grow, and
- levelling the playing field for small businesses.
Government supports included in the focus areas are building digital and cyber safety skills, promoting proportionate regulation and the simplification of red tape, supporting diversity, promoting healthy competition, and addressing the power imbalance between small and large businesses.
