Description
The report on government services (RoGS) provides information on the equity, effectiveness and efficiency of government services in Australia. This report provides performance reporting for housing and homelessness services. It includes a summary of government expenditure in the sector.
Detailed information on the equity, effectiveness and efficiency of service provision and the achievement of outcomes for the social housing and specialist homelessness services areas is contained in the service-specific sections.
The report is accompanied by a guide on how to find what you need in RoGS.
Housing
- Total state and territory government net recurrent expenditure on social housing was $5.4 billion in 2023-24, an increase of $0.4 billion from 2022-23.
- Nationally, at 30 June 2024, there were 432,369 social housing dwellings (tenancy rental units for community housing) and 407,940 households accessing social housing.
- As at 30 June 2023 there were 18,530 households and 17,533 dwellings managed by government funded Indigenous community housing organisations.
- Nationally in 2023, the majority of social housing respondents lived in dwellings of an acceptable standard (75.6% for public housing, 77.4% for state owned and managed Indigenous housing, and 84.4% for community housing).
Homelessness
- Total government recurrent expenditure on specialist homelessness services was $1.5 billion in 2023-24, or $56.44 per person in the population.
- Nationally in 2021, 48.2 Australians per 10,000 in the population were homeless on Census night, a total of 122,494 people.
- The number of clients with accommodation and services other than accommodation needs that were met in 2023‑24 was 272,689.
- Nationally in 2023-24, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people had a higher representation (28.8%) among all people accessing specialist homelessness services compared with the representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the total population.
