Description

This report discusses opportunities to improve outcomes for older Australians by facilitating data sharing. Data is collected in many different ways and formats to provide care for older Australians, but it is not always used optimally. This report highlights challenges such as:

  • lack of integration of aged care and health care data
  • variability in data access for users of the aged care system
  • sub-optimal data exchange between systems and people
  • stakeholders working with data in silos.

The report identifies key priorities for the aged care sector to improve its use of data, including:

  • streamlining how data is collected, stored and accessed
  • interoperability of data to ensure seamless data sharing within aged care systems and with health care systems
  • common data languages within aged care through a coordinated and guided approach
  • promotion of data standards programs
  • a coordinated, national approach to guide the improvement of data access and use in the sector.
