Description

‘Safe listening’ has been an ongoing global initiative to curb rising hearing loss due to unsafe recreational practices. This snapshot explores how some young Australians may engage with sound through emotion, identity and self-care. It considers how traditional messaging may be reframed to include safe listening as a positive act of self-care, not just ear protection.

Drawing on insights from young Australians aged 21–33, the report highlights how sound is deeply tied to emotions, identity and mental wellbeing – and how many already use sound to regulate mood, manage stress and find focus. Traditional safe listening campaigns often rely on risk-based messages, warning about the dangers of loud sound exposure. While these remain important, this snapshot argues they should be complemented by wellbeing-focused messages that speak to young people’s values such as autonomy, calm and emotional clarity.

Participants described barriers like sensory overload, stigma and social pressure, and called for better access to tools like captions, noise-cancelling headphones and sensory-aware environments. They responded positively to simple, relatable messaging – especially personal stories and practical tips.

The report recommends shifting the narrative from fear to empowerment, and framing safe listening as part of everyday mental health practices alongside mindfulness, rest and emotional regulation. By doing so, more people can be helped to protect their hearing and enhance their wellbeing, in ways that feel meaningful, relevant and sustainable.
