Description

This paper examines new data on housing development approvals and lodgements in New South Wales (NSW), which have been high and rising over the past few months. It finds that home building in NSW is likely to rise quickly over the next year but will fall well short of its target.

The National Housing Accord has a target of 1.2 million homes by 2029, of which NSW’s share is 377,000, translating into 6,900 building approvals a month. This paper predicts building approvals of between 5,000 and 6,000 a month.

The paper also compares development approvals to housing targets for each local government area. It identifies councils that are not approving enough housing.
