This paper raises the issue of formally addressing sustainability during the development of ICT solutions. Several environmental themes in ICT sustainability are presented including electronic waste, carbon emission, and energy consumption trends. The existing frameworks and standards that are in use for alternative industries are analyzed and their applicability to ICT is discussed for policy development. This includes carbon trading frameworks, energy emission reporting standards, and the ICT eco-efficiency guidelines. We build upon the ecoefficiency indicators and suggests several new indices for modelling ICT sustainability, including electronic waste, radio emissions, and waste heat. Together with existing models based on CO2 emission, the proposed indices serve as a basis for modelling the sustainability of ICT. The frameworks and tools presented provide a useful foundation for the development of more robust solutions that address sustainability with current and emerging ICT innovations. This may also assist government, industry, and research in developing policies that will help organizations meet their regulatory and social obligations in environmental sustainability.
