Increasing access and opportunity: nesting enabling programs in senior schooling

In-school enabling programs provide a pathway to university for students who lack access to, or do not thrive in the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank system. This report finds these programs are academically rigorous and prepare students for the transition to higher education, mitigating some of the disadvantages students from equity groups typically face.

This report examines the relevance of the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). Reflecting on its purpose, the analysis asks, for whom is it working; is its use changing; and what are the implications for national education policy objectives. It finds three in ten school leavers are now admitted to university without reference to an ATAR.

On widening participation in higher education: a national examination of equity initiatives in Australian secondary schools

Despite historic efforts to improve rates of higher education participation for educationally disadvantaged students, these students remain under-represented in Australian universities. This research examined the characteristics and targeting of university-run equity initiatives in schools during 2022. The findings indicate that these programs did not effectively target disadvantaged or regional schools.
