This audit examined students behaving in a violent way toward staff in Victorian government schools. It finds that reasonable steps are taken to provide a work environment that is safe from work-related violence, but there are weaknesses in how that safe environment is maintained. It presents three key findings and four recommendations.

According to the AIFS 2021 Survey of Older People, 2% of community-dwelling people aged 65 and older in Australia reported experiencing physical abuse in the 12 months preceding the survey. The most common form of physical abuse reported was threats to harm, followed by reports of actual harm such as being grabbed, pushed or shoved.

The articles presented in this publication examine the ways in which we approach the understanding of violence, and seek to explain and interpret it, embracing the full complexity of violence as a social, historical and political phenomenon, and the implications that this has for research and policy engagement.
