Despite occasional fearmongering about ‘hung’ parliaments, minority government and 'coalitions of chaos', the reality is that power sharing governments are common in Australia. This discussion paper examines the history of power sharing in parliaments around Australia.

After the official results of the 2023 New Zealand General Election were released, a journalist queried the Electoral Commission about an apparently anomalous result in one electorate. After discussion with the Electoral Commission, the Office of the Auditor-General decided to review the Electoral Commission’s quality assurance processes for counting votes.

This final report follows the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters’ interim report on the conduct of the 2022 election, tabled in June 2023.
