These children and young people may face a number of challenges that cause them to disengage from school and may require additional support to reengage with education, training or employment.

The evaluation examines School Nutrition Projects in remote Indigenous schools, focusing on dietary needs, program delivery, and holiday‑period nutrition. It finds the SNP highly valued for improving children’s nutrition, attendance, engagement and community employment. Key challenges include inconsistent parental contributions, affecting financial sustainability. Recommendations address administration, operations, monitoring, community engagement and cross‑agency collaboration.

The effects of non-attendance are cumulative and if they begin in the early years of schooling, they persist into future years. As a result, early attendance patterns, particularly in pre-school and Year 1 of compulsory schooling, are vital, according to this report.
