This paper focuses on the interior design of the modern home not from the perspective of aesthetic evaluation, but in terms of the considerations that were brought to bear in determining how the ideal of the 1950s home was to relate to the personalities of its occupants. Much of the commentary that is discussed in this paper was in an intellectual rather than a popular mode and relates to ideals of the modern home that were often self-consciously elitist.
