Improving digital wallet design by aligning the expertise of designers, users and academia
Digital wallets (DWs) are increasingly being embedded into a diverse range of sectors including banking, e-commerce, healthcare and government services. As DWs become integral to everyday life, the demand grows for secure, intuitive and user-empowered experiences.
This report presents inclusive, evidence-based frameworks to support digital wallet development that bridges gaps between policy, user expectations and commercial imperatives. It draws upon contemporary academic research, student-led community initiatives and interviews with commercial app designers, to identify key enablers that support informed digital identity management and decision-making.
The report offers targeted contributions to stakeholders including researchers, designers, policymakers, regulators, standards bodies and commercial organisations. Three overarching themes emerged:
- comprehensive research is needed to better understand and validate the DW design process, especially from the designer’s perspective.
- stronger alignment between academic and design priorities is essential to address user behaviour and identity management concerns.
- improved translation of complex regulatory and technical requirements into user-friendly, trust-building design is critical.
