Description

The report card provides a nationally representative picture of the scale and impact of mental health stigma and discrimination in Australia. It shows where progress has been made in reducing stigma and discrimination. It also shows where more work is needed. 

Key findings

  • 70% of people with mental health challenges had experienced discrimination in at least one area of life.
  • The greatest burden of discrimination for people with mental health challenges was seen in finding or keeping a job, in dating and forming intimate relationships, and when accessing housing.
  • 68% of people experiencing mental health challenges reported that living with stigma and discrimination was worse than living with the symptoms of the mental illness itself.
  • The most significant burden of discrimination was in relation to finding and keeping a job.
