This report seeks to untangle the multitude of factors contributing to Australia’s housing shortage and highlights high-impact strategies to boost supply and improve affordability. To truly improve access to housing for the current and future generations, we must look beyond the symptoms of the housing crisis and address its root causes.

This research examines housing trends and the processes of delivering affordable housing supply in rural and regional Australia. A clear research finding is the need for government action to ‘unfreeze’ rural and regional housing markets, making substantial investments and interventions in regional housing markets and developing stronger supply chains for rural and regional housing.

Compared with the conventional cast-in-situ method, prefabricated construction (PC) is a sustainable construction method. Results of this study suggest that incentivised strategies formulated by the Chinese government would improve industry practitioners’ capability of implementing sustainable PC projects to eventually expedite the industry’s transformation towards leaner, more efficient and sustainable practice.

This paper presents a new approach to robotic fabrication in the building industry through the conceptualisation, development and evaluation of a large-scale, transportable and flexible robotic timber construction platform – named TIM.
