Description
The Perrottet Government in New South Wales (NSW) is heading to an election with a promise not to change coal royalties, a position that is shared by the Opposition, to the delight of the mining industry.
By contrast, in 2022, the Queensland Government improved its coal royalty scheme to ensure additional government revenue is generated in times of high coal prices. The changes were announced in June 2022 and commenced operation on 1 July 2022.
This briefing note estimates the changes to royalty revenue that New South Wales would have generated had the state adopted reforms similar to Queensland.
