Psychosocial Recovery Coaching: client outcomes and experiences
Psychosocial Recovery Coaching was introduced under the NDIS in July 2020 as a ‘Recovery Oriented’ support intended to support people with psychosocial disability in working toward their own goals for wellbeing and life. As a relatively new service, evaluation of Recovery Coaching outcomes to date have been limited. The Centre for Social Impact Swinburne interviewed and surveyed NDIS participants receiving Psychosocial Recovery Coaching to learn about their service experiences and outcomes.
This research found that overall, participants described positive experiences of Recovery Coaching, and improved outcomes in feeling valued and respected, meaning and purpose, understanding and using their NDIS funds, social support, and choice and control in daily life. Though people sometimes experienced barriers to outcomes, most participants reported that Recovery Coaching made a positive contribution to their outcomes and delivered what they had hoped for. Central to positive outcomes was the relationship with the Recovery Coach - one based on trust and understanding of individual need.
