| 2024 Regional telecommunications review: recommendations | 1.01 MB |
Access to dependable telecommunications is not a luxury but a necessity. Reliable connectivity is critical as it links people who live and work in regional, rural and remote Australia to essential services, including healthcare, education, emergency response and business operations. Telecommunications enhances quality of life, supports community resilience and ensures that regional Australians can fully participate in the digital economy.
The report found that while many regional centres now enjoy urban-level connectivity, smaller and more remote communities still face ongoing struggles with service quality, reliability and affordability. It sets out recommendations to improve connectivity for regional, rural and remote communities, including First Nations communities.
The report makes recommendations across the following areas.
- Upscaling connectivity literacy
- Improving the mobile experience
- Expedite universal service modernisation
- Consumer protection
- Affordability
- Develop a national telecommunications data platform
- Regional telecommunications strategy
- Modernising government programs
- Support for the First Nations Digital Inclusion Advisory Group
- Embedding community Wi-Fi
- Transition oversight
- Expedite planning approvals
- Powering connectivity
- Evolution of Regional Telecommunications Independent Review Committees
