Description

Australia’s next Parliament can tackle the nation’s challenges in areas such as inequality, sustainability, health and education by raising more revenue through five main reforms:

  • ending fossil fuel subsidies
  • ending the gas industry's free ride
  • reforming the capital gains tax discount and negative gearing
  • reforming superannuation tax concessions
  • taxing luxury utes and plastic.

Combined, these reforms have the potential to raise between $12b and $63b per year. They would also deliver other benefits, such as:

  • reduce carbon emissions
  • improved housing affordability
  • reduced wealth inequality
  • increased road safety
  • reduced plastic waste.

This report argues that none of these proposals are radical, and even at the high estimate of additional revenue raised Australia would remain one of the lowest taxing nations in the OECD.
