An economic scorecard that assesses the performance of each Australian state and ranks them across 10 key economic measures. The measures include per capita economic growth, energy costs, wages growth, productivity growth, jobs growth, business investment growth, retail trade turnover, debt burden, tax burden and rental costs. Charts and tables are presented for each measure.
Key findings
- Queensland is the overall best performing state.
- Tasmania improved due to stronger economic growth, wages and productivity growth.
- Western Australia has fallen in ranking due to soft economic and productivity growth.
- South Australia declined due to continuing weakness in energy prices and weak retail turnover.
- Victoria ranked fifth with weak economic growth and high tax and debt burdens.
- New South Wales is the worst overall performing state in the nation.
