Description

As part of a research project to better understand how, why and under what conditions lived experience collaborations have impact in mental health research, this guide captures what was learned from co-developing and running a first partner consultation workshop with lived experience experts.

The guide is based on early experiences and reflections on the project team's practice – to provide practical advice for others who may be planning and hosting online workshops.

The learnings are shared to contribute to the growing knowledge on lived experience collaboration. It is hoped this practical guidance supports others developing workshops or engagement processes that centre lived experience meaningfully and respectfully.

Key practices

  1. Make materials accessible
  2. Clarify purpose and expectations early
  3. Build confidence through learning
  4. Offer flexible and inclusive participation options
  5. Stay grounded in lived experience, not just research tasks.
