Description

This position statement outlines a comprehensive vision for achieving gender equity in health care. The statement addresses key areas including sexual and reproductive health, perinatal care, menopause, gendered violence, intersectionality and workforce equity.

This 2025 revision of the statement highlights the unique health needs and challenges faced by women across Australia, and calls for culturally safe, respectful, and inclusive care. It advocates for evidence-based policy, improved access to services, and systemic reform to ensure all women can attain the highest standard of physical and mental health.

Women face different patterns of illness, disease risk factors, presentations of illnesses, and access to and use
of health services. These differences are shaped by biological, social, economic, and cultural factors as determinants of health. Gender, sex characteristics, and sexual orientation are some of the determinants of health that can impact health outcomes.

Considering health through a gender lens recognises the ways in which gender roles, resources and perceptions can impact an individual’s health. Integrating gender considerations into policy planning and delivery can help pinpoint areas of need, allocate resources, tailor interventions, and identify barriers or enablers to achieving better health outcomes.
