Gender neutral parenting and play is a big subject in Sweden. The country has recently adopted the gender neutral pronoun ‘hen’ – teachers are encouraged to say ‘good morning buddies’ instead of ‘good morning girls and boys’, and toy catalogues regularly show images of boys in Spider Man costumes pushing pink prams. Meanwhile in Australia, two women have quietly managed to make a major shift in how major Australian retailers do business when it comes to gender.

Thea Hughes and Julie Huberman's campaign “Play Unlimited” has seen most local toy retailers take off their labelling of ‘Boys’ and ‘Girls’ from the toy aisles.

Big W is the only major store holding out on this change and there’s much more work to be done.
