The Victoria Planning Provisions and all planning schemes will be amended in March 2017 to introduce the Better Apartments Design Standards. The Better Apartments Design Standards will apply to all apartment developments in Victoria. Apartment developments up to four storeys in a residential zone will be assessed against existing Clause 55 standards as well as the Better Apartments Design Standards to ensure that development respects existing or preferred neighbourhood character. Apartment developments of five or more storeys in a residential zone will be assessed against selected Clause 55 standards as well as the Better Apartments Design Standards to ensure that development reflects the existing or preferred urban context. All apartment developments in other zones will also be assessed in this manner. The standards deal with a range of considerations including building setback, apartment layout, energy efficiency, solar access, open space, ventilation and accessibility. The Better Apartments Design Standards aim to improve the amenity and liveability of new apartments, for the future wellbeing of Victorian communities.
