Research by Cathy Gong and Justine McNamara at NATSEM, commissioned by the Brotherhood, found that there is a high degree of involuntary unemployment among older adults. Overall, 20% of people aged over 45 who are not working would like employment. Of those aged 45–54 the rates are higher: 44% of men and 32% of women not in paid work are ‘involuntarily not working’. This has serious implications for families as many in this age group still have dependent children, and ties in with the Brotherhood’s advocacy and service development to support disadvantaged job seekers.
