Combining the Career Development Association of Australia's own research on what makes career help effective with other relevant reports, this position statement raises eight critical, pandemic-linked issues that impact people’s careers. It includes 26 recommended government actions that will help people get their working lives and the future economy back on track.
The eight issues are:
- Australia needs a life-long career guidance system
- Increasing digital inclusion
- Producing up-to-date career information
- Reducing insecure work
- Supporting unemployed workers
- Supporting mental health
- Supporting people studying
- Reshaping working Australia beyond COVID-19
Coronavirus restrictions have affected millions of Australians’ jobs, education, working arrangements and study plans – in short, their careers. As Australia awakens from hibernation, further government support will be needed to help people re-establish their working futures.
This help is critical because people do not give much thought to how the jobs and education systems work until they need to enter, re-enter or move within the workforce. Thousands of people now face the daunting tasks of figuring out what vocational course to do, how to prepare resumes and job applications, how to job search, what sort of online presence to have, how their skills transfer to other occupations, all during a time when they are possibly stressed, uncertain or afraid. People can hunt online for this advice, but much information is generic, and some of it is inaccurate, out-of-date, and unsuited to a person’s circumstances.
What the COVID-19 pandemic particularly highlights is the need for Australia to establish a highly visible, lifelong career guidance system that ensures that all people have access to career support across their lifespan, when they need it, and in the form that suits them.
