Description

This report is a call to action that confronts the youth homelessness crisis in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland, New Zealand). Generated from a hui held on 28 March 2025, where over 80 community groups, leaders and taitamariki (young people) convened, the report centres the voices, dreams and lived experiences of young people facing homelessness. The report urges policymakers to create systemic change that ensures taitamariki are not just sheltered, but truly supported to belong and thrive.

Among its key findings, taitamariki emphasise that housing must go beyond mere shelter – homes need to offer safety, cultural grounding, whānau and whenua (land) connections, a sense of identity, healing and belonging.

It proposes three urgent asks for Ministers.

  1. National strategy to end youth homelessness
  2. Immediate policy changes to remove barriers
  3. Increased investment in youth housing and wraparound support.
