Electric buses (e-buses) can help cities address air quality issues and reduce greenhouse gas emissions (along with a clean grid). However, the transition to e-buses has been subject to growing pains. This report identifies some of the largest and most common barriers to e-bus adoption.

This report is based on lessons learned from 16 cities that are working toward electrifying their bus transit fleets. It provides background information on e-buses and offers a planning and implementation framework for cities with varying levels of experience in e-bus adoption.

The Productivity Commission has been asked to complete this inquiry by April 2020, and to consult with stakeholders, including transport operators, drivers, industry groups, end users and State, Territory and local governments. This issues paper outlines a range of issues and questions on which the commission seeks information and feedback.

This research emphasizes the importance of designing resource cycles simultaneously with the energy transition, and the need for collaboration between energy-mineral sectors, which tend to be considered separately at present.
