Calling attention to the growing concerns about the effects of social media on youth mental health, this Advisory explores and describes some of the primary areas for mental health and well-being concerns, and opportunities for additional research to help understand the full scope and scale of social media’s impact.

This briefing paper emerges from an expert roundtable discussion about the capacity of the consent model to improve the digital world. It was prompted by discussions emerging from the Privacy Act Review, and international policy moves towards using ‘consent mechanisms’ to deny young people’s access to social media.

This submission from a group of young people relates to the collection and processing of children’s data, particularly for the purposes of profiling and behavioural advertising. It argues for stronger protections to give children more say about how their data is used and ensure use aligns with their best interests.

Acute Severe Hepatitis of Unknown Etiology (ASHUE) emerged as a new global outbreak in Indonesia early May 2022, coinciding with the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to understand public reactions and responses to the emergence of ASHUE Indonesia and to Government-led disease prevention responses.

This submission highlights that significant capacity gaps exist for mitigating electorally relevant mis and disinformation. It argues government should enforce necessary regulatory requirements that hold platforms accountable for the promotion of mis and disinformation, coupled with requirements for transparency to enable effective independent oversight.
