A balancing act: lawyers’ views on access to justice in regional, rural and remote NSW
A study on lawyers’ views on access to justice in regional, rural, and remote (RRR) New South Wales (NSW). The research draws on rich interview data capturing legal professionals’ perspectives on how legal services operate, what might support or hinder access to justice in the regions and what role technology can play in addressing the legal needs of these communities.
For legal assistance service providers, access to justice in RRR is a constant balancing act between tough challenges, complex decisions, competing demands and an unwavering dedication to support those who need it most. Anchored within local communities, legal assistance providers link in with social services and reach out to fill gaps in legal support, tirelessly working towards a client-focused more equitable justice system.
The findings highlight the importance of local knowledge, place-based models and collaboration, alongside nuanced perspectives on how technology can support access to justice without exacerbating inequity.
