The State of the Nation report this year is the eleventh report the Salvation Army’s Social Policy Parliamentary Unit has completed. New Zealand as a nation has changed in many ways over this time and each of these reports have served as markers along the way.

This report provides the New Zealand public with a broad overview of the current state of the national housing market and the housing system. This overview takes the form of a series of brief reviews of various housing outcomes and policy areas and backs these with extensive data and additional references.

This chapter presents data on the performance of governments in providing social housing, including public housing, State owned and managed Indigenous housing, community housing and Indigenous community housing.

The Australian Housing Conditions Dataset (AHCD) responds to a pressing need for a reliable and up-to-date housing conditions data infrastructure. This initial wave is focused on New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia. However, additional work to build upon, adapt and apply the AHCD research protocols to different population groups and locations is encouraged.
